San Leandro, CAMap of San Leandro, Ca.
San Leandro, CA, was founded on land granted to Spanish soldiers, Don Luis Maria Peralta (Rancho San Antonio) and Don Jose Joaquin Estudillo (Rancho San Leandro). Don Jose Estudillo's son-in-law, John Ward filed a map for a town site with the Alameda County government in 1855 to accommodate the many who traveled to California seeking their fortune in gold, but having failed in the California hills decided instead to settled in the prosperous San Francisco Bay Area. For a short time San Leandro, CA was the county seat for Alameda County, but the county courthouse was destroyed during the 1868 earthquake on the Hayward fault and the county seat was moved to Oakland. San Leandro, CA was incorporated as a city on March 21, 1872, one hundred years and a day after the area was discovered by Spanish soldier Captain Pedro Fages and the Spanish Catholic priest Father Crespi.
Alameda and Oakland both had major ports serviced by the railroads; since the railroads ran through San Leandro, CA many factories located themselves next to the rail lines. The factories, along with a robust agricultural economy, allowed San Leandro, CA to grow with its neighboring cities. San Leandro, CA has had a long history of food processing operations and corporate businesses, some of the more notable companies that claim San Leandro, CA as their home or have operations there include: JanSport, The North Face, Ghirardelli, Otis Spunkmeyer, and Coca-Cola.
San Leandro, CA maintains a long list of parks for residents; the San Leandro Marina, part of the San Leandro Shoreline Recreation Area, has docking facilities, picnic areas, and trails. Adjacent to San Leandro, CA is Lake Chabot Regional Park. Lake Chabot is a reservoir built in 1875 as the primary source of water for the San Francisco East Bay. Originally closed to the public, during the 1960's, legislations opened the lake to controlled use. The lake is regularly stocked with fish (trout and catfish), it is open throughout the year for hiking, fishing and boating.
